History:
In 2016, a working group of Pediatric palliative care was established at the University Hospital in Motol, consisting of selected employees of the hospital. Thanks to the financial support from the Avast Endowment Fund grant (nadacnifond.avast.cz) in 2016 and 2017, the members of the working group were trained in specialized palliative care (international internships, workshops, training) and together with several new experts apalliative team for the pediatric part of the Motol University Hospital was established. In the first period (from September 2017 to December 2017) the team offered end-of-life care mainly to children with cancer in the terminal stage of the disease, in the form of outpatient support and palliative care under the Department of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology, 2nd Medical Faculty, Charles University and University Hospital https: //www.fnmotol.cz/microsite-kdho. From January 2018, the scope of the palliative care team was extended to the entire pediatric section of the hospital, in order to offer specialized supportive and palliative care to all pediatric patients with life-threatening or life-limiting diseases, not just children with cancer. During 2018, the services of the team were extended to hospitalized patients across all departments of the pediatric section of the hospital. The pediatric supportive and palliative team began to operate in the form of a counseling team as an independent workplace and became the first and so far the only palliative team for pediatric patients in the Czech Republic.
In June 2019, the Motol Pediatric Supportive Care Team of the Motol University Hospital was supported by a grant project entitled “Palliative Care Support - Increasing the Availability of Palliative Care Health Services in Acute and Aftercare Hospitals (Reg. Number: CZ.03.2.63 / 0.0 / 0.0 / 15_039 / 0007277) ”, implemented by the Ministry of Health of the Czech Republic within the Operational Program Employment, financed from the European Social Fund.
Currently:
The pediatric supportive care team of the University Hospital in Motol is historically the first palliative team for pediatric patients and their families in the entire Czech Republic. We take care of pediatric patients hospitalized in our hospital, as well as children already discharged to outpatient care and their families. We care for children with life-threatening and life-limiting diseases, typically with the following diagnoses: hemato-oncological diseases, congenital developmental defects and genetic syndromes, severe forms of epilepsy and other serious neurological diagnoses, conditions after a serious injury with permanent consequences, children with cystic fibrosis, children waiting for organ transplants and severely premature children. The Motol departments which we cooperate most often with include the Pediatric Hematology and Oncology Clinic, the Pediatric Clinic, the Pediatric Neurology Clinic, the Children's Cardiac Center, the Department of Anaesthesiology, Resuscitation and Intensive Care Medicine, the Gynecology and Obstetrics Clinic - Neonatology department. As part of the continuity of care in the region, we cooperate closely with regional hospitals, general practitioners for children and adolescents, pediatric centres, home care agencies and with mobile hospices throughout the Czech Republic.
